The USPS has a program for military family members and friends to supply them with packaging materials to send packages to troops overseas. If you call 1(800) 610-8734 and select option # 1, ask them for the “Military pack” they will send you boxes, tape, packaging materials and labels at no charge to you or the recipient. They will also give you an I.D. number so if your supply runs low, you just call them up and they’ll send you more supplies. The materials take about four to ten days to receive. USPS web site www.usps.com/supportingourtroops/ has guidelines for packing, addressing, and shipping items to U.S. troops. The kit contains: – Three (3) each of flat rate boxes O-FRB1 and O-FRB2 – Two each of Cube boxes OBOX4 and OBOX7 – Address labels – Label # 228 10 each – One roll of Priority Mail tape – 15 customs forms with envelopes. The Marine for Life program provides sponsorship for Marines that honorably leave active service and return to civilian life. In short, for Marines leaving active duty honorably, the Marine For Life Program acts as a bridge between the Corps, the community, and the workplace. Marines are trained in fields as varied as communications, electronics, law enforcement, firefighting, information technology, human resources, administration, logistics, maintenance, air traffic control, supply, and finance. Through Hometown Links located in cities across the nation, Marines find help matching their skills to civilian jobs. Additionally, the program helps transitioning Marines quickly integrate into a network of resources that can assist them with needs ranging from continuing education, housing, veterans issues, child care, and legal assistance among others. The goal is to make each Marines transition from military service as positive an experience as possible.
There is a monthly Houston Marine Networking Luncheon for employers, transitioning Marines and anyone who is part of the Marine family in Greater Houston. This event is held the 3rd Thursday of each month at Masraff’s www.masraffs.com . The Fisher House organization uses more than a million frequent flyer miles per week in distributing free round-trip airline tickets to families of war-wounded servicemembers being treated in military and Veterans Affairs medical facilities across the country. To date, the program has distributed more than 4,000 tickets, using more than 150 million frequent flyer miles. Fisher House gets the millions of frequent flyer miles through “Operation Hero Miles.” The program has been expanded to wounded servicemen and women being treated at major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers across the country. Those who have approved convalescent leave may be given a free round-trip airline ticket to visit loved ones if they’re not eligible for government-funded airfare. Family members are also eligible for the free tickets. Requests for tickets have to originate from a servicemember and must be forwarded to Fisher House by a hospital social work staff member, family assistance center or service casualty office. The unused frequent flyer miles come from private and corporate donations. For more information on the program or how to donate your unused earned miles, visit http://www.heromiles.org/ and/or http://www.military.com/features/0,15240,78786,00.html.

The Tx-2 chapter of the Women Marines Association is gathering recipes for a cookbook project to raise funds for the 2008 national convention which will be hosted here in Houston. The title of the book is “Cooking with Marines,” and we’re soliciting recipes from Marines (men and women)….active duty, inactive, reserves, former (or current) military cooks, etc.
Please help us out by going through your recipes, and sending us your favorites. In the submission, please be sure to include the name of the recipe, a list of ingredients (pay particular attention to the measurements as we will submit exactly as you write it), the process for mixing and cooking, and any details specific to serving (I.e., serve hot, cold, chilled, etc.). Include your name, printed as you want it to appear in the book. We’d also be interested in hearing a little about your time in the service.
Please submit recipes to BJ Huggins (WMA), P.O. Box 1821, Pasadena, Tx 77501, or Karen Beatty at kebeatty1961@yahoo.com.
