America GI Forum – National Veterans Outreach Program, Inc.

Launched in San Antonio, Texas in 1972, the American GI Forum-National Veterans Outreach Program (NVOP) first sought to reach out to disenfranchised veterans of the Vietnam War by engaging other Vietnam-era veterans to communicate the availability of local resources and services for ex-military personnel. The initiative struggled with various hurdles early on, the most significant of which was funding, but eventually gained critical support from other veteran service organizations as well as influential community and civic leaders. Thirty-six years of dedicated service and 350,000 participants later the NVOP remains committed to the needs of underserved veteran populations.

OI Houston – Operation Warrior Lift

You may already know that the 72nd Army Infantry Battalion National Guard based in Houston will soon deploy more than 3,000 troops to Iraq. Operation Interdependence, Inc. has pledged to support these troops by sending Civilian Rations each month, just as OI nationwide has supported more than one million men and women of the military since 2001.

I spoke with the 72nd Battalion’s Public Affairs Officer, Major Adam Collett, today concerning the unit’s deployment schedule. On October 4, there will be a deployment ceremony at Minute Maid Park downtown for the 1,000 troops based in Houston. OI will have a table at that event to be sure that the signup procedure for receiving C-rats during deployment is clear.

Following the ceremony on October 4, the whole unit of more than 3,000 troops will report to Ft. Bliss in El Paso for two months of training prior to departure for Iraq. This training will span the Thanksgiving holiday. The soldiers will be granted 4 days leave for the holiday; but for some reason related to the timing of their deployment, they will not receive travel funds from the Army.

It is a concern that soldiers will either have to stay on base at Ft. Bliss due to lack of funds or try to rent a car and make the long drive. This could possibly be dangerous. Operation Warrior Lift has been proposed as a way to help these brave soldiers come home for Thanksgiving safely. Chartered buses or chartered planes to the major cities in Texas would be a good solution, but funds would need to be donated to cover the cost. Operation Warrior Lift would give the troops a morale boost prior to their deployment, as well as contributing to their well being and safety.

If you are interested in helping the 72nd Army Infantry Battalion National Guard spend Thanksgiving with their loved ones, please let me know; and I will direct you to the proper contact person. Does anyone have a cousin who owns a bus company or charters planes? J I have met several of these fine warriors, and our country is in good hands.

If you are interested in helping with Operation Warrior Lift for the 72nd Army Infantry Battalion NG, the person to contact is:
